Hi, I’m Louis, your fully qualified and experienced physics tutor here to help you get better at GCSE and A-Level Physics.
My Background:
From an early age I’ve always loved learning how things work and, unsurprisingly, physics was my favourite subject at school. After sixth form I went onto complete a Master of Physics degree at Durham University. While at university, I also spent a lot of time coaching sport. The thing that I most enjoyed about coaching was helping other people get better and seeing them achieve their goals (with a little help from me along the way). As I started to think about careers, I knew that I wanted to combine my love of physics with my love of developing and supporting other people. This led me into a career in physics education.
I completed my post graduate teacher training (PGCE) and achieved Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in 2013. Since then, I’ve taught GCSE and A-Level Physics to thousands of students as a full-time teacher. Over the years I’ve taught a whole range of different students with different interests, abilities and goals. Wherever you are in your journey with GCSE or A-Level Physics, and whatever you’re hoping to achieve, I can help.
During my teaching career I’ve held several leadership roles in physics education including eight years as Head of Physics/Head of Science. I’ve also been involved in training teachers and was the Lead Facilitator on a DfE funded Teacher Subject Specialism Training (TSST) course for three years delivering CPD to teachers of physics. From my experience of leading physics education in schools and training physics teachers, I’ve built up a detailed understanding of the many different approaches to teaching physics and their strengths and weaknesses. As a tutor, this means that I make sure that everything that you do with me compliments what you are doing in school with your teachers. When done well, tutoring and external support should dovetail perfectly with school-based learning.
Alongside my school-based role, I’ve also worked as an examiner marking GCSE and A-Level Physics papers for one of the main exam boards for nearly a decade. As examiners, we spend a lot of time studying mark schemes and analysing student answers. This means that I’ve got a very good understanding of what you need to do to get the marks, where the ‘easy wins’ are and which parts you’re more likely to find tricky.
I began tutoring over ten years ago, initially in face-to-face sessions. What I love about tutoring is that it is really bespoke. We’re able to work though the very specific topics or skills that you need to work on and can try a range of different approaches to find what works best for you.
Most of my time is now spent tutoring online and delivering revision classes, however I do continue to teach A-Level Physics part time in school in addition to having a portfolio of exam board and consultancy roles as a physics specialist.
I live in rural Derbyshire with my wife and young children. Outside of physics, I enjoy outdoor pursuits and am also a qualified Rock-Climbing Instructor and Mountain Leader.
